A NEW style of skateboard is causing a spate of injuries and children being admitted to hospital.
At least seven children in one week recently had to attend a Sydney emergency department after falling from a RipStik skateboard.Dr Matthew O'Meara, head of emergency at Sydney Children's Hospital, said the new product responsible for an increase in broken arms.
"We haven't seen anything too serious, but kids are breaking their arms as they are trying to stop," he said.
"Like any new toy - like when the scooter came out - you always see a spike in injuries. Especially after the first week of Christmas.''
Unlike the conventional skateboard, the RipStik has only two wheels and is harder to control.
Doctors at the Children's Hospital at Westmead are also starting to record RipStik-specific injuries.
